This Was Not Wonderland

Nibbled by rabbits,
my soul shreds, its severance
from the rest of me
not all that easy
in the mouths of prey. Eagles
circle overhead,
causing uncertain
glances among the nibblers
who know very well
the eagles are there.
All the leaves have dropped nearby,
the snarly bare limbs
offer vultures roost
as they wait for the rabbits
to finish me off.

I don't know any
more than this, not where or why.
I woke up so sad.

The chicken crossed the road. That's poultry in motion.
