Carrying The Message

Phone Booth Epic Mahoney courtesy Tess Kincaid as the Mag 105 photo prompt

Carrying The Message

I've gone as you said
to the back of this old world,
behind the staging
and there's no one here.

The cell service has faded
so I stand in this
phone booth (who uses
these booths these days?) with my bike
wearing out, and me
not sure what to say.

If this line gets through
call me your monkey's uncle.

  2. I, too, love the ending. It took me by surprise.

  3. Sounds a bit lost in the scenery, so to speak. Hello, we aren't in Kansas anymore are we? Cool idea.

  4. I like where you went with this; reminds me of a lot of Neil Gaiman's work, where he talks about the world's "backstage". But it's so straightforward here: nothing so odd or fantastic about it that the speaker can't take the time to make a call.

  5. I really enjoyed the time shift play in your poem. You crafted it seamlessly. I am happy you shared this, Christopher. Thanks.

  7. Thank you, all. Joseph, you are right to recall Gaiman. I reread his book American Gods recently. Tess' photo choice reminded me of Gaiman's backstage to the world so I used the idea here.

  8. Reminds me of the time my husband found a phone in Panama while he was in the marines...

The chicken crossed the road. That's poultry in motion.
