Sideline Chatter

Three Word Wednesday says, use these words and get somewhere. I wound up in football somehow. I don't get it but there it is...

Abrasive; noun: Any material or substance used for grinding, polishing, etc., as emery, pumice, or sandpaper; adjective: Tending to abrade; causing abrasion; abrading or tending to annoy or cause ill will; overly aggressive.

Handful; noun, plural: the quantity or amount that the hand can hold; a small amount, number, or quantity; or informal, a person or thing that is as much as one can manage or control.

Loss; noun, many uses including detriment, disadvantage, or deprivation from failure to keep, have, or get; the state of being deprived of or of being without something that one has had; or the accidental or inadvertent losing of something dropped, misplaced, stolen, etc.

Sideline Chatter

I am all tore up
from the floor up. I'm chewed up
and screwed up. I've hit
the abrasive patch,
scraped the hide off the handful
of hope that held me
on the scrimmage line.
It's a sack, a ten yard loss.
What will I do now?
When it's fourth down, punt.

  3. Scraped the hide off the handful of hope...

You got such a way with Poetry Christopher! It's like you take snatches of conversation and mold them into a screen play...a gatherer of sorts. So beautiful when you lay it out.

  5. I'll admit, the football references are lost on me. Like that "hide off the handful of hope" bit, though. And "scrimmage line"! What a phrase!

  6. I really would love to comment on this - unfortunately it's got absolutely nothing to do with cricket.

  9. I wish I could comment you guys. In fact I did, but some part of my internet deal here at work ate it. I am flat out of time here on my lunch hour and my scintillating commentary is floating in the ether where lost comments go...

Who, I read your comment and am a little relieved that you removed it from commentary. It would be better placed in email, I think. I understood some of it but you do write in oblique language. It's tough. I am sure you mean to make it that way, since you right straightforward sentences often enough.

  11. This piece so succinctly conveys the frustrations of the serious athlete. I'm always pleased and surprised by the variety of topics 3WW inspires.

  12. Kim, I am glad it felt like that for you. It means, perhaps, that my poem is metaphorically rich, because I didn't really mean it as a football player, of course. I do know and have played full dress football, complete with shaved and taped ankles. However, I was using the situation metaphorically for any predicament that requires you punt (give your initiative to an opponent or blocking situation).

  13. Why am I thinking that Green Bay just destroy Pittsburgh? lol

I really enjoyed this, thanks for posting.

The chicken crossed the road. That's poultry in motion.
