Effective Prayer - Reprise

There is a concept, a hope, a belief out there that began in the late sixties. In the late seventies it began to have a name. Called the Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon by some, it basically states that when enough of us really make a shift in paradigms, then we all go, assuming it is a true thing we are talking about and not a false hope. I know we discussed this idea hanging out in living rooms in 1966. I know I wrote my first poems about it in 1967. How many would be enough? Apparently more than appear in the photo.

Wiki says: The hundredth monkey effect is a supposed phenomenon in which a learned behavior spreads instantaneously from one group of monkeys to all related monkeys once a critical number is reached. By generalization it means the instantaneous, paranormal spreading of an idea or ability to the remainder of a population once a certain portion of that population has heard of the new idea or learned the new ability. The story behind this supposed phenomenon originated with Lawrence Blair and Lyall Watson in the mid-to-late 1970s, who claimed that it was the observation of Japanese scientists. One of the primary factors in the promulgation of the story is that many authors quote secondary, tertiary or post-tertiary sources who have themselves misrepresented the original observations.

Over the years the original claims are largely discredited as real science but the idea remains alive still today. There is a New Age Movement called the Shift Network. Google it and you will find what people are trying for these days, hoping to spread the consciousness of a new way of being and reaching that turning point. There are many phenomena that demonstrate a turning point and these include the awakening sometimes experienced along the sacred paths.

I have the same relationship to this idea as I do to Aliens Out There. I do so want these ideas to be true ones. I am fairly convinced we are too far down the drain to survive without some kind of intervention by God, Aliens, or Shifts in Consciousness.

I hope prayer can be effective in this matter.

Effective Prayer

The music draws me
Into the dance where you are
And gifts me with form.

So we twine, complicated
Shapes. We draw others to us.

Dozens, hundreds, more
Until we reach that moment.
Then God moves the world.

  1. this is quite a lovely poem. a lyrical testimony to the hundredth monkey....

...which is a really neat concept.... i remember reading it about it years ago in stephen j. gould's work... thanks for revisiting it here.

  2. I wish the science was real, incontrovertible. Unfortunately that appears not to be the case. As with most paranormal phenomena, there is a wall between the happenings and the proof. I live in magical worlds as well as scientific ones. Straddling worlds as I do, I don't have to turn away if the science disappears but it would be so much happier if this stuff would just settle into proof formations.

  3. What always intrigues me, is that scientists often don't like to acknowledge that their 'facts' existed long before their mathematical formulas 'proved' them. Long may we all continue to believe in the magical, so far unscientifically proven aspects of life.♥
I enjoyed your poem on the subject...

  4. i was thinking about this the other day, how it might be that the world might shift, and i wasn't very hopeful. i thought, ok, then just me in my place, i'll do my work and that will be what this is about. i do believe in the hundredth monkey, however. i've seen it happen in politics too often. unfortunately it seems to happen without consciousness.

it's kind of staggering to think that such a positive and thoughtful shift could happen but even this is possible. i see the corners of it flux in terms of environmental movements. but again, it is strange to me. again it seems more a ripple without consciousness, people jumping into a wave they don't seem to truly understand.

  5. Jinsky, the Leprechauns are quite pissed at the scientists...

Erin, it is not very useful to fail in hope. The changes we have seen are small versions of the change that must happen. Yes, as with the the hundredth monkey, the change will be largely unconscious and in being so will also be largely incomplete and will require much continuing work. In some ways it will seem like nothing has changed. The fearful among us will continue to fear. How will we know the change has occurred?

  6. there was a guy
an under water guy who controlled the sea
got killed by ten million pounds of sludge
from new york and new jersey
    this monkey's gone to heaven

    the creature in the sky
    got sucked in ahole
now there's a hole in the sky
    and the ground's not cold
and if the ground's not cold
    everything is gonna burn
    we'll all take turns
    i'll get mine, too
    this monkey's gone to haven

    rock me joe!

    if man is 5
    if man is 5
    if man is 5
    then the devil is 6
    then the devil is 6
    then the devil is 6
    then the devil is 6
    then the devil is 6
    then god is 7
    then god is 7
    this monkey's gone to heaven

    This Monkey's Gone To Heaven
    The Pixies

The chicken crossed the road. That's poultry in motion.
