The Backfire - 3WW

Thom writes:
Each week, I post three words. You write something using the words.

Then come back and post a link to the contribution with Mr. Linky (but please, link to the exact post, not your blog, by clicking on the exact post title and paste it to Mr. Linky below). As always, there's no hard-and-fast rule that you have to post on Wednesday.

This week's words:

Backfire; Embarass; Taste.

A backfire set in Montana, 2006 (James Woodcock, The Billings Gazette Staff)

The Backfire

All down the fire line
the soot black heat and the crew
and the backfire rage
red eyed and streaked cheeks
claw hammer hands embarass
the reality
of the brazen blaze
you set to your freaky taste
last week and we've found
the sign of your camp
though we have not found shadows
of your god damned friends.

  1. that's terrible. I hope they were able to put it out before it destroyed more.

  2. That's a competently different way of looking at backfire than I was thinking. This has the ring of real life to it.

Great use of three words. Please read my attempt.

  3. This may seem like an experience or something but I totally made it up out of the serendipity of coming across in my google search the naming of a backfire as one deliberately set by fighters in order to stop a wildfire. It was easy to get from there to arson.

  4. In South Australia the police have a list of potential arsonists for our bushfire (wildfire) season. Of the 222 persons of interest they are monitoring, 33 are considered high-risk, 70 a significant risk and 119 a possible risk. The State population is 1.3 million.

    1. I suppose that something like that happens around here too, though we have a forest service and most parts of the forest are outside police jurisdiction.

  5. Cleverly done. Sad about the friends though.

    1. Interesting take on the friends. There are others, such as "the fire is so big that it took more than one guy to set it, hence the (god damned) friends".

  6. Christopher, sock it to 'em. People, and it seems more and more they are young, set fires for kicks or for getting on the news, as much as there are unguarded or unproperly doused campfires. "God Damned Friends" is exactly right. No jail time for them - let them clean up houses and wreckage from the tragedy they have wrought. Suitable punishment, no?
    Peace, Amy

The chicken crossed the road. That's poultry in motion.
