That Is All & The State Of Things

Dreaming Of The Afterlife

"A loving heart is the beginning of all knowledge." - Thomas Carlyle

"Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives." - C. S. Lewis

"All my life, my heart has yearned for a thing I cannot name." - Andre Breton

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." - Lao Tzu

"All you need is love. All you need is love, love. Love is all you need." - John Lennon

That Is All

Love is not only
happy horseshit nor even
the McCoy.  Love is
not just sunshine and hope
but is the grim job watching
my wife die, also
my Mom take her last
breath while I said, "It's okay
with us, dear, let go."
Those who gathered stayed
silent at that finality
and then I began
to weep. That is all.

The State Of Things

I am blessed, no doubt.
So why have I found complaints
Like vines choking me?

Just today I felt
mortality rising up
like river systems
in flood as I stood
at my mirror saying, "You!
you are bound to die,
and soon, sad bastard!"

But truth is, I guess, I want
death to come to me.
I am okay with it
and wish for a mate to be
with me anyway.

Nothing's more selfish than that...

  1. Love, a blessing and a curse. We love wholeheartedly to then lose those we love? I think not, we love to learn, their spirit , their soul, their being . Love without expectation and receive more than one could possibly imagine, whether the body and soul are still of this world or not, 'it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.'

  2. To me love and hate are on the same spectrum of the great passions, Christopher. I reckon we need both but more love than hate to counteract its ill effects.

Two beautiful and poignant poems here Christopher that to me exemplify the business of our human mixed emotions and the stuff of life ad of death. Thanks.

  3. And worm comfort

    Love schmov
    This love crap
    Of all four letter words
    Love
    Is the only one
    That can fuck me
    Over and over
    And leave me wanting more
    In spite me
    Overriding me
    With it's delicious tingle
    And worm comfort
    Toppled into despair

  6. Sweet Ms. Doyle, I am surrounded by love, with many good and trusted friends...

I have no mate. The reason I call myself selfish, I always want more.

Even here it splits into two minds. I don't want to accomodate another in my life when it comes to the way I live. I just want the blessing of a mate, not the responsibility. See how selfish?

  7. oh jesus, can i manage to read past that is all? i'm not sure anybody should. but i'll try.

is it? (the second) is it selfish to want this, to put it upon someone to witness us? is it? i think we have no choice once we are set in motion. we have no choice but to pull each other down. i wrote this a few days ago. it feels like we are speaking to one another. i've not posted it yet.

    an ordinary tragedy

you have your arm around me and you are about to tell me of precipices, beginnings and necessary next steps, and as the story goes, as it continues, it will reach fruition and end. it is an ordinary tragedy. you tell me about love and how once it opened for you like a flower. you tell me about how your breath was once always fresh. you look toward me to kiss me.

i ask, we are about to do this, aren't we?

why, yes, you answer, we are. why yes.

    but haven't we learned anything?

of course, of course, we have, you tell me. we will fall like stains upon each other until the bitter end.

    this is love, i wonder?

yes, you tell me, smiling through your tea stained familiar. we are already ruined.

  8. Erin, however you see things, I see us as evenly matched, pretty much. Your work is compelling, this piece is compelling. In some parallel universe I would do everything I could to woo you. In this one I hope that you will be openly in my life a very long time because I really want to know what happens to you and yours.

The chicken crossed the road. That's poultry in motion.
