A Midsummer Night's Melancholy by Michael Sowa

Summer Love
It's become awkward
and muggy besides, cobber.
(That's Aussie for pal.)
The dog wants a friend.
The cat has what it wants now.
And your painting shows
a late afternoon
but you have called it a night,
a hot summer's night.
And me? I sit here
in my basement writing you
this aside on love.

Another Michael Sowa:
Love all these levels of reality in your poem. Intriguing and sensitive.

ReplyDeleteawww, beautiful
ReplyDeleteI can tell you that where I live this could very well be night at this time of the year.. night is just a few hours, and not really very dark.
ReplyDeleteRight; it's a midsummer night's day...
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought of Alaska as I read your poem ~~ in summer. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteI like it! Nice twist.
ReplyDeleteLove the poem, and have loved Sowa's gently bizarre paintings for years.
ReplyDeletethere is definitely something a bit eerie about midsummer's night, too...
Nice one. So many dogs need more frequent friends!
ReplyDeleteWhere there's love there's hope - and a tin of food to share! Lovely.

ReplyDeleteThank you all for visiting and saying kind things. Writing to prompts keeps us all green, I think.
