Invitatory

David Anointed By Samuel, the Dura Synagogue, Syria
ca. 1400 CE

Thom writes:
Each week, I post three words. You write something using the words.

Then come back and post a link to the contribution with Mr. Linky (but please, link to the exact post, not your blog, by clicking on the exact post title and paste it to Mr. Linky below). As always, there's no hard-and-fast rule that you have to post on Wednesday.

This week's words:

Flesh; Novice; Sear

David's Invitatory

The flesh speaks for me.
Oh I am but a novice
in the holy work.
Sear the words upon my brow.

You speak, rosy light.
Oh God peel me like new fruit
that I may stand here
free of all my crusty ways.

  2. It is hard to ignore the cries of flesh..and skin..maybe that's what makes as human -and a little less than 'perfect' - not crusty - that line made me :) Jae

  3. If only it were so easy to be rid of crusty ways. Even with divine help, it's a daily battle.

  4. Bathsheba's David? Or David's Bathsheba? Or God's David and Bathsheba? I so damn love, that even in his human willfulness...he was a man "after God's own heart." Nothing is said of her. What does that mean? Does everything necessarily mean something? So many questions.

  5. Awake, when I wrote those words I was consciously aping a song whose name escapes me now.

Jae, I am glad you liked that line... I wrote and rewrote the poem right there.

Ann of the bunnies, I agree with you that I return to the work every day. Even when you are done with yourself, there is the rest of creation to bring along :<0/

    Sheilagh, thank you

Annie, he was indeed a man after God's own heart. Why would a patriarchal historical record have much place for the inner life of some female, especially in David's story? He was after all a king as well as a man. From that point of view it means nothing. You'll have to make Bathsheba's story up.

  6. Wonderful. There is much bounty is light and spring yet we find yourself, often, novice. There is much consistency and hope in these words. Lovely.

The chicken crossed the road. That's poultry in motion.
